Lanai Screen Repair in Naples, FL

Naples lanais are built for breeze and kept for bugs. A torn screen turns a porch into a mosquito pen, and the fix is usually small. This page covers how screens are repaired and what is left to a screen enclosure company.

What a screen visit covers

Most calls are a handful of torn panels, a screen door or a few window screens. Counting them on the call helps plan the visit.

Q.01

Can a handyman repair a torn lanai screen?

Yes. Torn window, door and lanai screen panels can be re-screened with new mesh and spline. Small tears can be patched, though a patch is a stopgap, and a full panel re-screen is the lasting fix.

A re-screen means the panel is removed, the old spline and mesh are pulled out, new mesh is laid over the frame and pressed into the groove with fresh spline. The result is tight and flat, unlike a patch. Panels that tear again in the same place are worth a closer look at the cause, such as a loose frame, a branch, a pet or a sharp edge. Large pool cages are made of long aluminum frames and many panels, and a full rebuild of that structure is specialist work. The line handles individual panels, doors and window screens.

Q.02

What is a no-see-um screen, and do I need one?

No-see-um mesh is a finer screen made to block the tiny biting midges common near Florida water. Standard mesh lets them through, so owners near canals, preserves and the beach often choose the finer mesh.

Standard 18 by 14 mesh stops mosquitoes and most flies, but no-see-ums are small enough to pass through it. A finer 20 by 20 mesh keeps them out, with the trade that it reduces airflow and visibility a little. Neighborhoods near canals, preserves and the water get more of them, especially around dusk. Pet-resistant mesh is a heavier, vinyl-coated fabric that resists claws but also softens the view. Solar screens block sun and cut glare, and they also darken the view, which suits a west-facing lanai. Tell the line how you use the space and which bugs are the problem, and a mesh can be chosen to match.

Q.03

Why do lanai screens tear and fade so quickly in Naples?

Sun, salt, wind and storms wear mesh down, and aluminum frames corrode and loosen over time. Fiberglass mesh fades and turns brittle after years in the sun, and then tears from small forces.

Fiberglass mesh is the standard in lanais, and UV breaks it down slowly. Salt air corrodes aluminum frames and fasteners, which loosens the panel and lets the mesh flutter. Fluttering mesh wears at the spline and tears at the corners. Wind gusts push on the whole panel, and storms add debris. Frames that have bowed or corroded corners need attention along with the screen, or the new mesh fails in the same place. Spring is a smart time to inspect screens, before the wet season brings the heaviest wind. Walk the lanai and look for pulled corners, sagging panels and any place the spline has popped out of its groove.

Q.04

Can screen doors and window screens be repaired too?

Yes. Screen doors, sliding screens and window screens are re-screened, re-hung or replaced to fit. A screen door that will not close or latch usually needs a closer adjusted or a hinge reset.

Window screens are the easiest repair. The frame is removed, re-screened and set back. Screen doors take more abuse and often need new hinges, a closer, a latch or a kick plate to stay in shape. Sliding screens on patio doors are covered on the sliding door page: a worn roller or a bent frame is the usual fault. Odd-shaped screens may need new frames. Send photos of each, with a measurement if you can, and a count of how many there are. Larger jobs, such as a dozen window screens, are easy to schedule on one visit.

Q.05

When is the right time to fix lanai screens before storm season?

Spring is the right time to re-screen torn panels and check frames, so the lanai is tight before storm season starts. After a storm, torn panels and bent frames are the first things to inspect.

Storm season runs from June 1 to November 30, and screens take wind first. A tight panel on a sound frame carries wind loads better than a loose one with torn mesh. Many communities have their own rules on how screens and cages are handled, and some associations specify mesh types and colors, so check your rules before choosing. After a storm, walk the lanai: bent frames, popped spline and holes from debris show up quickly. Individual panels can be re-screened. If the damage is the structure itself, a screen enclosure company or an engineer is the call.

Q.06

What should I have ready before a screen visit?

Have photos of each torn screen, a count of panels, the mesh you prefer and clear access to the lanai. Move furniture and plants away from the screens so the panels can be reached from inside and out.

Tell the line how many panels need work and whether they are window screens, doors or lanai panels. Say if you prefer the standard color, a darker charcoal that is easier to see through, or another color to match the frame. Mention pets and whether they scratch, because pet-resistant mesh would then save a repeat visit. If the lanai is part of a rental, say when it is empty. A condo or HOA may have limits on mesh color or type, so check before ordering.
