Q.01

Can a handyman replace a deadbolt or door lock?

Yes. Replacing a deadbolt, handleset or knob on a standard door is a routine handyman job. The old lock comes out, the new one fits the existing holes, and the door is tested. The line replaces locks. It does not cut keys.

Lock replacement covers entry doors, garage entry doors, patio doors and interior doors that need privacy. Most modern locks fit the standard holes drilled for the old one, so the swap is quick when the door is in good shape. Two measurements matter: the backset, which is how far the lock sits from the door edge, and the bore, the large hole through the door. New locks list the ones they fit, and a photo of the old lock helps. The line also fits locks that you bought first, which is common. Tell the line the finish and brand if you have chosen one, and mention any problem with the door, since a lock cannot fix a door that does not close well.

Q.02

Can a smart lock or keypad lock be installed?

Yes. Keypad and smart locks install on a standard deadbolt hole and are set up with codes or a phone app during the visit. The door needs to close squarely, and the lock needs batteries and a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection if it uses one.

Smart locks suit rental homes, seasonal houses and busy families who share codes instead of keys. Keypad models work without an app, and connected models let you issue codes from afar, which many owners of Naples second homes value. The install is the same as a regular deadbolt, plus setup: batteries, codes, the app and a test of the latch. A door that sticks makes a smart lock fail more often, because the motor has to push against the strike. Some condos and HOAs limit changes to entry door hardware, so check before buying. Tell the line which lock you chose and whether you want it linked to a phone.

Q.03

Why do locks and deadbolts fail faster near the Gulf?

Salt air corrodes steel parts and finishes, and humidity swells wood doors, so locks stiffen and latches stop lining up. Replacement locks in stainless or coated finishes hold up better than plain steel or thin brass plating.

A lock that has been fine for years can start to stick when the finish wears through and rust gets inside. The cylinder collects grit, and keys start to bind. Graphite or a dry lubricant helps for a while, but heavy oil collects dirt. Wood doors swell in the wet season and shrink in the dry, so a latch that lines up in January may miss in August. A door that is out of square makes any lock work harder. On the coast side of Naples and on Marco Island, owners often choose stainless or finishes labeled for coastal use. If your lock is only a few years old and already pitted, send a photo and the line can say whether it is the lock or the door.

Q.04

Can a door that rubs or will not latch be repaired?

Yes. Doors that rub, stick or miss the latch are adjusted by resetting hinges, trimming a swollen edge or moving the strike plate. Warped or rotted doors may need a new slab, and that is described on the call.

Doors move with humidity. In summer, a wood door swells and rubs the frame; in drier months it shrinks and rattles. The fix depends on where it rubs. A hinge screw that has pulled loose can be reset with longer screws into the framing. A strike plate that sits a fraction too high or low is moved. Planing an edge is a last resort, and sealing the cut edge matters in this climate, since bare wood takes on water. Interior doors, pocket doors and closet doors are handled the same way. If the bottom of a door has soaked up water and softened, replacement is the honest answer.

Q.05

Does the line handle commercial doors and door closers?

Yes. Door closers, commercial lock repair and door adjustments for small shops and offices are part of the work. Describe the door type and the fault, such as a closer that slams or a door that does not latch.

Shops around Fifth Avenue South, the Tamiami Trail and the business parks off Airport-Pulling Road have doors that open all day, and closers wear out. A closer that slams or never fully shuts leaves a door unlatched, which defeats the lock. Closers can be adjusted for speed and latching, and replaced when they leak oil. Commercial lock repair covers storefront locks, back doors and office doors. Say whether the door is glass, metal or wood, and whether the building manager must approve the work. Visits for businesses can be planned around opening hours.

Q.06

What should I have ready before a lock replacement visit?

Have the new lock in its box, photos of both sides of the old one, and a note on any door problems such as rubbing or a swollen edge. Say whether the door is wood, metal or fiberglass.

Check that the new lock matches the door: entry sets and smart locks come in different backsets and for different door thicknesses, and the box says which. Keep the old lock hardware until the new one works, in case something needs to go back. Have the code or the app account ready if the new lock is a smart one, and charge the batteries. If you share keys with a cleaner, a manager or a tenant, plan who needs the new ones before the visit, because the line does not cut keys. In a condo or HOA, ask whether entry door hardware must match the building.
