Q.01

Can a handyman repair a leaking faucet in Naples?

Yes. Most leaking faucets need a new cartridge, washer or seal, and a handyman can replace the part or the whole faucet. Leaks at the base or under the sink point to supply lines or fittings, which are checked too.

Faucets leak for a handful of reasons. A drip from the spout is a worn cartridge or seat. Water around the handle comes from a worn seal. A puddle under the sink can be the supply lines, the drain connection or the faucet body. Hard water leaves scale that wears parts faster, which is common here. The line finds the source, replaces the part if one is available and fits, and otherwise suggests replacing the faucet. Photos of the faucet and a short description of where water shows up help. Many of these jobs are done in one visit.

Q.02

Why does a toilet keep running?

A toilet that runs is usually a worn flapper, a flush valve that does not seat, or a fill valve set too high. Replacing the flapper or the fill valve fixes most of them and stops the water from wasting.

The tank holds water behind a rubber flapper. When the flapper warps or the chain is wrong, water leaks into the bowl and the fill valve refills the tank over and over. A dye tablet in the tank shows a leak if the color reaches the bowl without flushing. Fill valves can also fail, with a hiss or a trickle that never stops. The parts wear faster in homes with mineral-rich water. Replacing the whole set of internals is an easy way to end the trouble. A toilet that rocks at the base needs a new wax seal and secure bolts, which is a different repair. Describe the sound and when it runs.

Q.03

Can a toilet be replaced or reset?

Yes. A toilet can be replaced with a new one, or reset on a fresh wax seal if the old one leaks at the base. The supply line and shutoff valve are checked and replaced if they are stiff or corroded.

A toilet that rocks, leaks at the floor or has a cracked tank or bowl is a candidate. The old toilet is shut off, drained, lifted away and the flange is cleaned. A new wax seal goes on, and the new toilet is set, bolted and leveled. Floor flanges that are broken or sit too low need additional work, and the line will tell you if the flange is the issue. Toilet height, bowl shape and the distance from the wall matter when you shop, so check the rough-in size. Water-saving models are common, and many flush better than older ones.

Q.04

Do faucets and sinks wear out faster in Naples?

Often yes. Mineral buildup from hard water is common in Southwest Florida, and humid air and salt corrode finishes and fittings. Cleaning aerators and replacing stiff shutoff valves extends a fixture's life.

Scale builds up where water dries: aerators, spray heads and shower arms. A faucet that sputters or sprays sideways usually needs the aerator unscrewed and soaked in vinegar. Cartridges wear sooner in mineral-rich water. Salt air dulls chrome and eats at brass fittings on lanai sinks and outdoor showers. Shutoff valves under sinks, called angle stops, seize if they are never turned, and replacing them is easier on a calm day than during a leak. Many homes in Golden Gate Estates use private wells, which can leave iron stains and add scale of their own. If a fixture is old, replacement can be quicker than repair.

Q.05

Can sinks and drains be installed or replaced?

Yes. Bathroom and kitchen sinks can be replaced where the supply and drain lines are already in place. Moving plumbing or changing the layout is a larger job that the line will say is outside handyman work.

A new vanity sink, a pedestal sink or a drop-in kitchen sink is mostly a matter of disconnecting the supply lines and the drain, setting the new unit, sealing it and reconnecting. The drain trap is reused or replaced. Bathroom vanities with a sink top are installed in a similar way, with the base set level and secured. The line also installs dishwashers where the supply, drain and power are in place. Check the cabinet size and the number of faucet holes in the sink before buying, since a mismatch is the most common problem.

Q.06

What should I have ready before a faucet or toilet visit?

Have the new fixture if you bought one, a photo of the shutoff valves, and a note on what the fixture does wrong. Clear the cabinet or the floor around the fixture before the visit.

Point out the main shutoff for the home if you know where it is, because a stuck valve under a fixture sometimes means shutting the house water for a short time. Tell the line if the valves are old and stiff. Mention if the fixture is in a condo, since some buildings require notice to shut off water for a stack. If the toilet is the only one in the home, have a plan for the visit. Remove items from under the sink and from around the toilet. Send photos from the front and from below the fixture, and a short description of the fault. If water is leaking now, shut the valve and say so on the call.

Put the faucet and toilet job on a ticket

Nothing is sent from this page. Fill in the ticket and it turns into one short message to read out on the call.

Say which fixture it is and what it does, and photograph the shutoff valves under it.
